Dynamic Pressure Sensitive Adhesion in Nematic Phase of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

چکیده
The correlation between the anomalous mechanical dissipation and pressure-sensitive adhesion in nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) is explored, comparing hard glassy soft materials (high low crosslinking density, respectively) versus isotropic genesis. Two significant factors are identified contributing to strong adhesion: intrinsic damping, which high phase, surface roughness, affected by elastomer At same time, it found that energy plays only a minor role adhesion. Theoretical calculations of dynamic carried out summing over full range frequencies dynamic-mechanical master curves data, averaging roughness regimes, results fitting measured data with quantitative accuracy. Finally, strength LCEs altered controlling phase temperature demonstrated.

Nonlocal model for nematic liquid-crystal elastomers.
We have developed a fully nonlocal model to describe the dynamic behavior of nematic liquid-crystal elastomers. The free energy, incorporating both elastic and nematic contributions, is a function of the material displacement vector and the orientational order parameter tensor. The free energy cost of spatial variations of these order parameters is taken into account through nonlocal interactio...
متن کاملNematic fluctuations and semisoft elasticity in liquid-crystal elastomers.
We give a detailed theory of nematic fluctuations in liquid-crystal elastomers (LCEs) and calculate relaxation rates as obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). In ideal LCEs, a nematic state is formed by a spontaneous orientational symmetry breaking of an isotropic state, manifesting itself in an existence of a coupled director-shear soft mode (Goldstone mode). The relaxation rate of the so...

Biological tissues have the remarkable ability to remodel and repair in response to disease, injury and mechanical stresses. Synthetic materials lack the complexity of biological tissues, and man-made materials that respond to external stresses through a permanent increase in stiffness are uncommon. Here we report that polydomain nematic liquid crystal elastomers increase in stiffness by up to ...
متن کاملDynamic Theory of Polydomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers.
When liquid crystal elastomers are prepared without any alignment, disordered polydomain structures emerge as the materials are cooled into the nematic phase. These polydomain structures are often attributed to quenched disorder in the cross-linked polymer network. As an alternative explanation, we develop a theory for the dynamics of the isotropic-nematic transition in liquid crystal elastomer...
متن کاملIsotropic-nematic transition in liquid-crystalline elastomers.
In liquid-crystalline elastomers, the nematic order parameter and the induced strain vary smoothly across the isotropic-nematic transition, without the expected first-order discontinuity. To investigate this smooth variation, we measure the strain as a function of temperature over a range of applied stress, for elastomers cross-linked in the nematic and isotropic phases, and analyze the results...
